The word on the street is that Sacramento is on the up-and-up; supporting local music is a wonderful way to help fuel Sacramento on its journey. Luckily, Sacramento has plenty of talent and live music shows every night of the week, so supporting local music shouldn’t be hard at all. As a matter of fact, it should be quite fun!
You might be overwhelmed with the legion of upcoming shows in January. With oodles and oodles of bands playing, who will you check out this month? Here are some of my suggestions:
James Cavern at Marilyn’s on K, Jan 4:
If anyone has been taking the Sacramento music scene by storm lately it’s native Englishman James Cavern. This singer-songwriter and creative power behind the infamous Porch Sessions seems to be everywhere these days. You can find him playing the funkiest, grooviest, sexiest cover songs and originals all over Sacramento and beyond. James’ The Pilot EP will be coming out March 7, 2013.
Musical Charis at Harlow’s, Jan 11:
If you haven’t yet experienced the mirth and madness of a Musical Charis show, this is your chance. This well-established Sacramento indie group is known for their quirky stage presence, tight vocal harmonies, and the occasional game of musical chairs during their performance. As a bonus, Sacramento indie darling Autumn Sky will be on the bill this night as well. That just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside!
Island of Black & White at Torch Club, Jan 22:
If you are already sick of the cold and want to feel as if you’ve stumbled into a magic portal of summer love, look no further than Island of Black & White. This incredibly talented local act will blow your mind oh-so-gently with the smooth rhythms of Nawal Alwareeth and Chris Haislet’s angel-kissed booming vocals. This funky, folky, soulful, acoustic blues duo breaks my heart in the best way every time.
These are only a few small drops from the vast spacious pool of radical rhythms and melodic miracles that make up the Sacramento music scene.
Who are some of your favorite Sacramento bands?
