Run, Stretch, and Dance This Turkey Day

Thanksgiving is a time to remember all that you are thankful for. This year, spend some quality time helping others at these local sports events.

The weather may be getting chillier, but Sacramento’s sports scene is really heating up! Take the chance to run with those you’re thankful for and celebrate the season with these fun athletic outings.

Run to Feed the Hungry Thurs (11/26):
The Run to Feed the Hungry is something of a tradition in the Fisher household.  My family and I have piled into the car way earlier than anyone should have to wake up on a holiday and head off to Sacramento State to run in the cold. While this may sound like torture to some, this run is truly a magical experience. I’m not running fanatic, in fact, I may only jog once or twice a year, but I never miss the Run to Feed the Hungry because of how much fun this experience is. I haven’t missed the run in six years (my parents haven’t missed in even longer) because the fundraising goes towards a great cause and the camaraderie among the community is too fun to miss.

Where else will you see people dressed as turkeys, wearing turkey hats, or simply making turkey noises everywhere you look. Before the race begins everyone huddles together at the starting line like a rookery of penguins trying to stay warm. My favorite part of the race every year is the start of the race or as I affectionately call it “The Stampede.” This “stampede” isn’t an unsafe trample of people, but rather a joyous kick-off to the race.

The most important part of the Run to Feed the Hungry is that it helps benefit the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Their goal is to “[help] those in need by alleviating their immediate pain and problems and moving them toward self-sufficiency and financial independence.” This run is one of the organization’s biggest fundraisers of the year and it couldn’t come at a better time. Every family deserves to have a great holiday and the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services helps make that a possibility for thousands of local families.
